What Makes a Volar Wrist Support Different?

A wide variety of wrist support braces, wraps, and splints are available. What makes a volar splint different? Volar wrist splints are unique in the way that they support the volar area (the palm side of your hand through your wrist and forearm), which is a great method for managing severe to non-severe conditions within the hand and wrist. A volar wrist splint immobilizes and supports while allowing room for and managing any inflammation and swelling. Volar splints minimize movements and provide support and comfort by stabilizing an injury of the palm or wrist.

What Exactly Does “Volar” Mean?

Volar refers to the flexor surface of the forearm, wrist, or hand, meaning directly along your wrist and forearm on the palm of your hand. This is where the volar wrist splint gets its name, as that is where the metal splint within the brace is located to immobilize, protect, and support that section of the wrist, hand, and forearm.

Using a Volar Wrist Splint for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Pain

Volar splints are the most common form of treatment when it comes to relieving carpal tunnel syndrome pain. The semi-rigid splint located within a volar wrist brace passes directly under the wrist and into the palm of the hand, where carpal tunnel most often occurs. Many people with mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome wear a splint at night for a few weeks. The volar splint holds the joint in a neutral position while still allowing the fingers to be free, which is an added bonus for comfort. The neutral position allows for effective and efficient healing of any carpal tunnel pain surrounding the wrist and palm.
